The so-called Blue Book is an evaluative study that was issued in response to an initiative by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. First published in 2001, it catalogues all those eastern German cultural institutions that are of national significance. It lists ‘beacons’ – museums housing national cultural heritage – as well as ‘cultural monuments’ – institutions dedicated to important German historical figures. These (to date) 23 cultural beacons have organised themselves together into the Conference of National Cultural Institutions.
The title of the Blue Book was borrowed from the ‘Blue List’. This evaluation study catalogued those research facilities of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (East Germany) considered worthy of receiving funding from the federal government of the united Germany.
The Blue Book is intended to provide an opportunity to better identify with this cultural heritage and to emphasise the significance of the eastern German cultural landscape for the cultural heritage of the entirety of Germany, and also Europe. The study has appeared – with slight modifications regarding selection and ranking – three times to date: 2001, 2002/03 and 2006.
