The palaces, parks and architectonic elements of the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz form an incomparable cultural landscape, set between the Elbe and the Mulde rivers. The seventeenth- and eighteenth-century buildings fit harmoniously into the 142 km² Gartenreich, which was added to the World Heritage List in 2000 and is a part of the biosphere reserve 'Flusslandschaft Mittelelbe' (Middle Elbe riverscape). The scenic continuity of the six landscape parks and the diversity of stylistic epochs are unique. Thus, between Dessau and Wörlitz, cultural history from the Baroque, Rococo and Neo-Classicism all the way to the architecture of the Bauhaus can be experienced in close proximity. The five palaces, which still feature their original furnishings, and the gardens that accompany them vividly evoke the culture and history of the princely court of Dessau and of the German Enlightenment.
