The museological institutions among the cultural monuments are primarily dedicated to historical figures of national significance. These include musicians, writers, artists, scholars, discoverers and inventors.
Most of the 20 cultural institutions that are listed in the current ‘Blue Book’ (Blaubuch) as cultural monuments of particular national significance are located in small towns of the former East Germany. They are typically either the houses where these exceptional individuals were born or lived or in the towns where they were born. In addition to major museums, nationally significant literary and music archives are also included.
