The traces of nature

The origins of the Senckenberg Naturhistorische Sammlungen Dresden (SNSD) go back to the Kunstkammer (cabinet of art) founded by the Saxon Elector August I. They comprise the Museum of Minerology and Geology, the Museum of Animal Sciences and the Central Library of Natural History, which were formed into an independent, specialised museum of natural history in 1728. These are quite probably the oldest geobiological institutions in the world. With 6.5 million objects, the collections of the SNSD rank it among Germany's five largest natural history museums. The diverse specialised collections serve to advance the documentation, presentation and research of the history of geological and biological developments within a global context.
