Staatliches Museum Schwerin

Art collections, castles and gardens

Diverse treasures of international significance – from the ancient to the contemporary – await visitors to the art collections of the state museum and to the three former ducal residences of Schwerin, Ludwigslust and Güstrow. The museum gallery is situated prominently next to the castle and the Schwerin lake: here, you can find the famous collection of seventeenth-century Dutch painting as well as highlights from other centuries. Works drawn from the extensive holdings of the Mecklenburg Art Collections, ranging from the ancient to the contemporary, are presented in the historic rooms of the palaces. The Ernst Barlach Stiftung Bölkow and works by Marcel Duchamp, Pablo Picasso, John Cage and Sigmar Polke are among the most prominent holdings of twentieth-century art. Temporary exhibitions, focused primarily on contemporary art, serve to complement the permanent collection.
