Wartburg-Stiftung

Luther and the Minnesingers' Contest

The Wartburg castle was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 as an exceptional monument of the feudal period in central Europe. The mythical Minnesingers' Contest ('Singers' War'), the charity of St Elizabeth, Luther's stay and his translation of the Bible, the students' Wartburgfest and the romantic-nationalist restoration of the castle provide the basis of its symbolic status. The Wartburg-Stiftung (Wartburg Foundation) was founded in 1922. Its purpose is to preserve the castle and to provide for public access to it as an important cultural site, a historical monument and a museum featuring a permanent exhibition. In addition to tours and the medieval treasures and temporary exhibitions of the museum, the Wartburg also offers an extensive programme of cultural events.
